If you are like me, you’ve probably done your fair share of experimenting on your skincare journey, with varying degrees of success. Determining what works and what does not can be hit or miss, but adding these three DYI delights to your arsenal is a safe bet in your acne treatment and efforts to age gracefully.

1. Cooling Blueberry Balm

Soothe irritated skin with a cooling infusion of antioxidants for a fresh, balmy glow.

Directions: Combine 4-5 frozen blueberries with 1 teaspoon of pomegranate seed oil, 1 drop of lavender oil, 2 tablespoons of baking soda, 1-2 tablespoons of water (water can be replaced with pomegranate juice. If you have large blueberries you can use less water or juice), and a pinch of chia seeds. Mix into a paste and spread on face. Leave on for 20 minutes and remove with a warm, wet washcloth.

Reasons your skin will love it: Blueberries and pomegranates are full of antioxidants, such as flavonoids, that protect your skin from free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules in the body that bind to healthy cells and damage their membranes when they oxidize, leaving the cells vulnerable to damage caused by toxins. Antioxidants can repair existing damage and remove free radicals from the cells. Pomegranate seed oil goes on skin like a balm and will keep your face moisturized for the rest of the day. The small but mighty chia seed packs a punch with high concentrations of vitamin E and zinc, which work with antibacterial lavender oil to help heal open acne wounds. Add this to your acne treatment plan!

2. Cinnamon-Honey Mask

Directions: Mix three tablespoons of honey (raw honey is the best!) with a tablespoon of ground cinnamon. Stir it into a gooey paste with the cinnamon evenly distributed throughout. Apply it to your face with damp hands and rub it in thoroughly. Let it sit for 20 minutes and remove with Zum Charcoal Sugar Facial Scrub. Afterwards, apply your favorite moisturizer and any other skincare or makeup you like.

Reasons your skin will love it: Not only does this mixture smell delicious, its benefits are endless. Honey is a natural anti-inflammatory agent with antibacterial properties. It is full of vitamin B6, calcium, vitamin C, niacin, thiamine, and riboflavin. In addition to being loaded with nutrients, it contains small amounts of alpha-hydroxy acids, which are chemical exfoliators that gently remove dead skin cells and bring out skin’s natural radiance. Cinnamon is a physical exfoliant that stimulates collagen production and encourages blood flow to the skin. Collagen keeps our skin elastic and youthful, and our bodies produce less of it as we age. Encouraging collagen production helps prevent sagging, wrinkled skin and allows us to age gracefully.

3. Sizzling Suction Mask

Directions: Scoop two to three teaspoons of Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay into a small bowl. Pour two caps full of Organic Raw Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar over the clay. Let it sizzle and permeate the clay, then spread the wet clay evenly across your face. Layer additional clay on any areas that are inflamed or need additional cleansing. As it dries you will begin to feel your pulse in your skin. When the clay is dry and your skin feels tight, remove by massaging jojoba or another carrier oil into your face and cleansing with a hot, wet washcloth.

Reasons your skin will love it: This treatment leverages the cleansing power of clay with the antibacterial, toning power of apple cider vinegar to clean out your pores. Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay contains almost every mineral found on the planet and draws out impurities in the skin as it dries. Infusing it with apple cider vinegar to kill acne bacteria makes this treatment the ultimate secret weapon in your skincare arsenal. It can also be used to spot treat acne; dab a small bit onto the top of the pimple or cyst and leave it on overnight. Some of the clay will crumble and fall off, but some will adhere to the pimple/cyst and drain it overnight. Squeeze it gently the next day to remove any other congestion.

Give these delightful concoctions a try and let me know how you like them! ~Taylor
